ABOUT US

WWW.ASIANHOOPS.COM IS DEDICATED TO BRINGING YOU - THE HOOP FAN - THE LATEST SCOOP ON HOOPS ON THE EAST COAST.

THIS SITE IS SPONSORED BY THE NEW YORK ROCKITS ATHLETES IN ACTION, A NOT FOR PROFIT SPORTS FOUNDATION (SEC. 501 (C)(3).

The New York ROCKITS Athletes In Action was founded in 1985 by Leo Hirata and is a community based not for profit sports foundation dedicated to enriching the lives of Asian youths and adults through the sport of basketball. Our purpose since inception has been to encourage social interaction amongst the vast Asian population and to foster the developments of youths in the community.

Since 1990, the New York Rockits AIA has been under the guidance of Denny Lee. With his experience and knowledge of working closely within the Asian community, the N.Y. Rockits organization has collaborated with many local groups to stage activities for youths as well as the adults. Organizations such as the Chinatown YMCA, The Asian American Education and Heritage Foundation, the NYPD 5th Precinct Community Affairs Unit, North American Chinese Basketball Association, New York Cruisers Athletic Club and the United East Athletic Association, have all been part of our success. Funding for the NY Rockits comes entirely from private donations; community sponsors; numerous leagues and tournaments; and the ever-popular summer 3-on-3 basketball extravaganza (2008 = 14th Annual). Other annual events organized by us include the annual Asian Basketball Classic at Ramapo College; the 5on5 Friendship Cup and the Summer Nights Basketball League during the months of July/August.

In 2009, the NY Rockits AIA, was selected as a future host organization for the 29th Annual NACBA Chinese National Invitational Basketball Tournament scheduled to be held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida during the Memorial Day Weekend. In the past, we have also hosted the 27th annual tournament in Mesa, Arizona and the 19th Annual North American Chinese-Asian National Basketball Tournament, which was held at the prestigious Seton Hall University. That year, a record breaking forty-nine national teams (ages 13-55) from across the United States and Canada. Cities represented include New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, Washington, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Montreal, and Toronto. Another milestone was the introduction of the first championships for Women/Girls, Men's Senior (30-over) and Boy's Hoop Dream (15-under).

In its 23rd year of existence, our programs provide a year-round schedule of activities to over 2,000 youths and adults annually. Currently, there are over one hundred and twenty-five active members (players, family, volunteers, friends) participating on our seven club teams. These seven teams consist of members ranging from ages 11 through 50 with an emphasis on our youth oriented teams:
